What If You’re Closer Than You Think?

There’s something we talk about a lot when we set goals…

Starting.

🎉We Celebrate…

➡️ The New Beginning

➡️ The New Idea

➡️ The New Adventure

➡️ The New Commitment

We get excited about what could happen 💃🏾

But lately I’ve been thinking about the other side of starting.

Finishing 🏁

Not because finishing is always easy.

Actually, quite the opposite.

Oftentimes finishing is the hardest part 😮‍💨

Because somewhere between the excitement of starting and the satisfaction of completing something, there is usually a long stretch where the newness wears off 🤷‍♀️

We’re tired.

We’re frustrated.

Things didn’t go the way we imagined.

We start wondering if it’s worth it.

We might even think:

I’m done. I’m throwing in the towel.

And that’s where something really important happens.

We GET TO decide whether we’re going to walk away or keep going.

We Could Be SO MUCH Closer Than We Think!!

Recently I experienced this lesson in a very real way.

I was part of a four-month leadership experience that challenged me in ways I didn’t expect.

There were highs, lows, frustrations, breakthroughs, laughter, tears, exhaustion and SO MANY takeaways.

And as we got closer to the end, I watched something that really stayed with me.

A few people chose to leave the experience just two weeks before graduation.

Two weeks 🤯

They had already made it through almost the entire journey 😳

And I want to be very clear: this isn’t about judging anyone for making the decision they felt was right for them!

I can understand that life happens; circumstances change and sometimes walking away from something is absolutely the right choice.

Howeverrr…

It made me think about something we don’t always consider when we’re standing in the middle of a difficult experience:

What if we’re closer than you think?

1. What if the thing we’ve been working toward is just around the corner?

And…

2. What if the breakthrough, celebration, opportunity, connection or transformation we’ve been hoping for is waiting on the other side of one or perhaps two more difficult weeks?

We don’t always get to know we’re that close

That’s the tricky part!!

Sometimes we’re standing days away from the finish line and we feel like we can’t take another step.

And if we walk away, we’ll never know what was waiting for us 🤦‍♀️

Perhaps the biggest question of all:

How close am I?

Because we might be closer than we think.

The Cost of Leaving Too Soon

We usually think about the cost of continuing.

● This is hard.

● I’m tired.

● This is taking longer than I expected.

● I don’t know if I can do this anymore.

But there is also a HIGH cost to leaving.

1. Sometimes it’s FOMO.

What would have happened if I had stayed?

2. Sometimes it’s Regret.

I wish I had just pushed through.

3. Sometimes it’s a Hit to Our Confidence.

Not because quitting automatically means we’re weak or incapable. But because when we repeatedly abandon things the moment they become difficult, we start collecting evidence that says:

“I didn’t follow through! I just can’t count on myself”

And that last thought matters.

Because confidence isn’t only believing in ourselves…

Confidence is trusting ourselves!

Trusting that when We say we’re going to do something meaningful, we can STAY with it when, and even if, it gets uncomfortable.

Finishing Gives Us Evidence

Think about it...

We make a commitment.

Then it gets hard.

We want to quit.

But we stay.

We keep showing up.

We finish.

And suddenly we have something we didn’t have when we started:

Evidence.

Evidence that says:

● I can do hard things.

● I can keep going when I’m uncomfortable.

● I can finish what I start.

● I can count on me.

That’s POWERFUL💥

Because the next time life gets hard, we don’t have to convince ourselves that we’re capable.

We’ve already proven it 🙌

The Finish Line Changes Us

One of the most beautiful things about finishing something difficult is that the reward isn’t always the thing we originally set out to get 😉

We become someone different along the way.

● More Disciplined.

● More Resilient.

● More Courageous.

● More Confident.

● More Willing to Trust Ourselves.

And sometimes we discover that the experience itself was preparing us for something we couldn’t see when we started. Something that was waiting for us AFTER we did the hard thing of staying!

That’s what makes finishing so powerful!!

We’re not just completing a task…

We’re becoming the person who completed it.

And more often than not…

THAT PERSON is the real reward🎖️

So Before You Start Something New…

Here’s my challenge for you this month:

Before You:

1. Add another goal to your list

2. Start another project

3. Jump into the next exciting thing

Look around...

Is there something you’ve already started that deserves to be finished?

Maybe it’s…

☐ A book

☐ A class

☐ A creative project

☐ An application

☐ A conversation

☐ A commitment you made to yourself

☐ Something you’ve been putting off because the excitement is gone and the actual work is what’s left 😬

Go back to it…

Take another look!!

Ask yourself:

What if I’m closer than I think?

Because you may be standing so much closer to the finish line than you even realize.

And you don’t know what’s waiting for you on the other side of finishing the darn thing.

Your Finish-Line Challenge

Think of ONE thing you’ve started but haven’t finished.

What did I start? ______________

Why did I start it? ______________

What’s stopping me? _____________

How close am I? ____________

And finally:

What is ONE thing I can do in the next hour to get closer to finishing? In the next 24 hours?

Because rememberrrr…

What if you’re closer than you think? 😉
